New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these medications need to be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
