Prime TV Selections: Seven Can't-Miss Films This Coming Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the feared consequences of advancing years. The veteran actress presents a brilliant acting turn as Elisabeth, a mature celebrity demoted to hosting an aerobics show on the small screen. Edged out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome procedure called the Substance. This creates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic among both women. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit mystery stars Keira Knightley as Laura, a skilled journalist who opts for some time off from reporting on world issues to board a high-end voyage with an ailing Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her partner, as well as other affluent passengers. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts awaken. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his creative boundaries through this nifty ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe occupies their recent residence, the lens – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the ghostly being, and the entity appears defensive toward her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that could catch you off guard. This Saturday, multiple showings, Sky Cinema

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom via this meta comedy caper. He acts as an egotistical celebrity called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Hired by the intelligence agency to investigate the alleged criminal, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Set in 1978 Denver, several disappearances has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney gets captured by the villain and locked up in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with spooky callers giving advice, as the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, nighttime, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. The couple begin profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, however Jessica Chastain achieves to present Tammy Faye with compassion. Next Tuesday, 1.15am, Film4

Black Bag

This period's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as tight like the turtlenecks used by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission with uncovering a double agent among the team out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars excel of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of fact versus fiction takes place. Additional actors take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
